The Worst Ones

Discovery Film Festival

A film crew have arrived at a housing estate in the suburbs of Boulogne-Sur-Mer, in the north of France. During the process of casting the film, four teenagers, Lily, Ryan, Maylis and Jessy, are chosen to play leading roles. Everyone in the neighbourhood is surprised: why have they chosen what the community refer to as “the worst ones“?

"...an unflinching look at the filmmaking process."

Winner of the Un Certain Regard competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, this is an unflinching look at the filmmaking process – and how there can be both winners and losers when the circus rolls into town. Beautifully photographed and tightly edited, The Worst Ones offers a provocative assessment of how the filmmaking process can take advantage of those, and especially the young, who fall under its spell.
