Will Afghan Star shine at the Oscars?
Afghan Star, from director Havana Marking, has been added as a late entry to the UK's submission list for the Academy Awards, in the Foreign Language category. Effectively the long list for the Oscars, it's from these titles that the official nominees are selected, offering the chance for this independant documentary to take it's rightful place amongst the best in international film.
The British-produced documentary details how the Afghan version of Pop Idol took the nation by storm after the Taliban's 30- year TV ban was lifted. Not just entertainment, this was the first chance for young people in Afghanistan to experience democratic voting where everyone - young, old, female, male - had an equal right to vote as part of this national TV show phenomenon.
Find out what all the fuss is about - Afghan Star screens at the Discovery Film Festival on Saturday 31st October at 1.30pm, at the DCA Cinema.
