Torsten Lauschmann: Startle Reaction
22 October 2011 - 6 January 2012
Exhibition opening: Sat 22 October
Artist Torsten Lauschmann is fascinated by latest technologies, as well as the earliest forms of cinema, when film and projections were part of magic shows in the Victorian age. He merges these seemingly very different elements to create immersive and inventive installations that have won him much acclaim in recent years. The large DCA gallery will feature a vast projection work, a wall of magic paint waiting for you to draw on it with light, and a self playing piano.
In 2006, Torsten became infamous when he devised the elaborate hoax of World Jump Day, suggesting that if enough people in the Western Hemisphere jumped at the same time the Earth could be shifted off its orbit. In 2010 Torsten was the recipient of the prestigious Margaret Tait Award and is short-listed for this year’s Jarman Award. He is also working with Edinburgh University, on creating and viewing site specific art using augmented reality, and mobile devices as part of a Vital Spark Award from Creative Scotland.
