Discovery Film Festival: Scotland's International Film Festival for Young Audiences
20th October - 1st November 2009
Hailed by Scottish Screen as Scotland's leading youth film festival, Discovery Film Festival is thriving in its 6th year. Based at Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA), and touring to partner venues throughout Scotland, the festival screens films from all over the world which have been specially selected for young audiences.
In 2009 the festival screened over 30 films, to an audience of more than 6000 young people at the DCA and other venues throughout Scotland. Films included animation, anime, black comedies, coming of age films, documentaries, drama, and musicals and arrived at the festival from as far afield as China, Canada, Afghanistan and Australia.
Discovery aims to develop new audiences for international film, improve media literacy, and offer young audiences an insight into the lives of children and young people in other cultures. The festival has been running since 2004 when it was started as partnership with Dundee Education Development Department, Scottish Screen and DCA. It has a thriving schools programme, with ticket sales growing year on year, and a popular public festival at evenings and weekends. The schools programme is supported by free transport from Stagecoach.
The festival tours a selection of films to partner venues in Dumfries and Galloway, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Falkirk, and Fife, and is in discussions with Regional Screen Scotland about extending this service to the Highlands and Islands.
Discovery also organise year-round activities and film screenings for children, young adults and schools, at the DCA, and are involved in offering Moving Image Education CPD opportunities and working with Scottish Screen, Learning Teaching Scotland (LTS), and Dundee City Council Education Development Department, on MIE projects.
